The pineapple, that sweet delicious fruit most often associated with Hawaii and the tropics has been a symbol of hospitality for ages. Yet when pineapples were first discovered, they were often too expensive to eat. In fact, people would rent pineapples for use in their party displays, because they couldn’t afford to purchase one themselves, let alone eat the delectable fruit.
But why did the pineapple become such a symbol of hospitality and welcome? Well, the first documented encounter with a pineapple took place in November of 1493, when Christopher Columbus made his way ashore to inspect a deserted Caribbean village. His crew came upon piles of freshly gathered vegetables and strange fruits, hidden among dense vegetation and wooden pillars carved with serpents. The sailors learned how to crack open the pineapple, and proceeded to eat, enjoy, and write about the sweet fruit.
As both refined sugar cane and fresh fruit were pricey rarities in Europe, the pineapple became an instant hit. But it took quite some time before Europeans cracked the code on how to grow the pineapple – almost 200 years. Eventually they were able to develop a hothouse growing method that was suitable for the tropical plant. And though pineapples were becoming more common, they were still rather rare to a large degree, and as such, the pineapple became a perfect gift item. And to have received a pineapple as a gift was considered quite the honor indeed.

As farmers and organizations have learned how to perfect the art of growth (Dole Plantation in Hawaii) for the pineapple, the symbol of hospitality has remained. Companies like Williams-Sonoma have even incorporated more subtle uses of the pineapple into their brand image, as a secondary way of demonstrating their welcome to their valued customers. And of course, oodles of companies have been formed in the last 100 years specific to creating pineapple-based concoctions.

Today, Americans and Europeans alike love creating new and interesting pineapple-based concoctions. “Aside from the traditional pineapple upside-down cake (which is always a winner), if you are looking for something on the savory side, Mexican-style pork tacos (Tacos Al Pastor) leverage both pineapple juice and pineapple rounds to create a unique juxtaposed savory-sweet taste,” shared Cassie Pipo, one of A’BriTin’s food and beverage experts. “I love the simplicity of chicken and pineapple skewers, made on the grill,” shared Ann Bloomquist Jarema, vice president of marketing and sales.
For those looking to sweeten their adult beverages, there are an array of excellent choices. “I love a good pineapple mojito. Made with fresh chunks of pineapple, white rum, lime juice, club soda, and lightly packed mint leaves for garnish, it’s a popular drink in the summer and all year long,” shared Carlos Massaquoi, A’BriTin’s bar manager. Jordan Feist, A’BriTin’s director of bar operations shared that “our guests enjoy pineapple rum punch, but the Blue Hawaii cocktail is definitely a favorite.
