The late-night snack bar

With wedding celebrations that linger long into the late hours of the evening (or even the wee hours of the morning), it is no wonder that brides and grooms are opting for late night snack options at their weddings. Dinners tend to be served most often around 5 or 6PM, and by 10 or 11PM, guests are often getting hungry, especially after spending hours on the dance floor

There are more options than one can possibly imagine for their late-night event-based snack bar. And, these snacks can be served in just about any style you want. Help-yourself type stations are ongoingly popular, but some bridal parties elect for butler passed snacks too. Regardless of the way you plan to serve your late-night snacks, your guests will appreciate the opportunity to refuel after a long day.

Eat dessert first

Late-night snacks are not limited to savory items. In fact, many popular snack ideas include mini-donut stations, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, funnel cakes, s’mores bars or stations, root beer floats, and mini cupcakes. Roberto, our head chef of our Apples 2 Apples farm to table line shared that when he got married, they offered an ice cream sundae bar. “We wanted something different than the traditional wedding cake. So, we brought out some bowls, ice cream, and a wide variety of toppings including warm chocolate, caramel, and butterscotch. Our guests loved it.”

A new and exciting sweet late-night snack at A’BriTin includes the cherries jubilee and bananas foster experience. Chaz Tichy, director of operations shared that “these experiences are so unique. Our chefs actually do the flambé right there with guests watching. Not only do these desserts taste absolutely amazing, but they make for great photo opportunities too.”

Savory bites

For the non-sweet lovers, offering some savory snacks can be just as delightful. Christina, head chef of our The Little Piggy Catering line loves serving walking tacos. “We set out a bin of different bags of chips, and then guests can select what they want to add to their bag of chips. It is simple, quick, and fun.” Roberto, on the other hand, prefers a full-fledged taco bar. “Wedding guests love our guajillo pork tacos. With garden fresh onions, cilantro, tomatoes, limes, and radishes, and then some queso fresco and spicy sauce, you can’t go wrong.”

Other popular savory items include sliders, French fries, mini grilled-cheese sandwiches, pretzels served on a wall, and cups of macaroni and cheese. Pizzas are an absolute crowd-pleaser too, and are the most popular selection of A’BriTin Catering & Hospitality customers. “Pizzas and tacos are great snacks to accompany a beer, especially since you can use one hand for the beer and the other hand for your pizza or taco,” Roberto shared.

Olivia, our exclusive representative for Belle’s Event Center in Belle Plaine, MN said “my favorite late-night snacks are cheese curds. They are delicious and always hit the spot. Plus, they can be served and enjoyed with so many sauces such as ranch, barbecue, and even ketchup for the kiddos at the event.”

When to put out the snacks

Figuring out the right timing for all of the activities at the reception can be a bit stressful. From cocktail hours to dinner time to all of the various dances that need to take place, not to mention bouquet tosses and dollar dances, there is a lot going on. But generally, it is best to serve your late-night snacks approximately three to four hours after the dinner. This is simply a rule of thumb however, so most caterers will work with their customers to understand everything that needs to take place, and will take into consideration when the bar needs to shut down, and when the venue needs to be vacated. When selecting late-night snacks for your wedding, be sure to work with your caterer on the best time for your particular situation.

Late-night snacks are a responsible choice

Not only do your late-night snacks help to satisfy the wedding reception munchies, but they can also help to positively affect the absorption of alcohol into your bloodstream. Of course, the specific effects of how drinks will impact your body will vary based on how much you drink, how often you drink, what you drink, and who you are. But these snacks can help.

First, the actual process of consuming snacks can help slow down the amount of alcohol that you or your guests are consuming. When you consume alcohol, it begins to absorb into your bloodstream right away. But, when you add water or non-alcoholic drinks, it can help to dilute the alcohol in your system. Consuming food will slow alcohol absorption as well.
