Going the extra mile – creating experiences and memories to last a lifetime

As a catering company that got its start about 30 years ago, we’ve had the opportunity to be a part of some pretty special events. From weddings to corporate events and holiday parties, there are a lot of activities that go into planning any event. For all events, the food is obviously a necessary aspect and guests are often hungry and ready to eat when they arrive. Though providing fantastic food and beverage, and a great service is a caterer’s primary function, we take it up a notch and step in wherever we are needed.

Taking it above and beyond

As such, over the years, we’ve captured some pretty amazing stories of when our staff went above and beyond to help save the day. Cassie Pipo, one of our sales team members, told us about one of our recent events that had been catered by our This Little Piggy Catering brand. “The tiered cake had come from a local licensed bakery. But the wedding coordinator and a bridesmaid pulled the cake out of the box, only to discover that one side of the cake had all but slid off. They were going to try to cover it up with flowers.” Enter Pipo to the rescue. As a trained pastry and design expert, Pipo was able to “fix the cake without the bride and groom ever knowing what had happened. I was delighted to be able to use my skills to help solve the problem.”

Jordan Feist, our director of bar operations, has shared several stories of guests showing up for wedding receptions in less-than-their-best states. “We can’t control what guests do before they arrive at the reception. Often times, some guests arrive after making a visit to a bar or two on their way to the reception. Clearly, they’ve been having a good time, but it is also obvious that they have been overserved. We want to make sure that they have a good time, stay safe for the rest of the day, and don’t cause a disruption to the event. So, we will keep an eye on them, helping them to stay hydrated with water, and distracting them from too much further alcohol consumption,” Feist shared.

Feist also shared that it is now common practice to bring non-alcoholic beer options, even when not requests as part of the bartending contract. “We know that there are people out there that choose not to drink, and they don’t always share their decision with others. When someone comes to our bar and asks for a non-alcoholic beer option, we want to be able to provide.”

At another event, sales team member Rachel Czarnecki shared that the mother-of-the-bride and bridesmaids had arrived to the venue in dismay as they were dissatisfied with the professional hairstyles that they had done. “It was a hot and humid day and their hair was falling out of the clips. Our catering team was ahead of schedule, so I was able to run to a local store, pick up some curling irons, brushes, and clips, and get them back to these ladies so that they could re-do their hair in advance of the ceremony. It made me feel good to know that I could do something to make the day a bit easier for them,” she shared. “And I was sure to grab a bag of chocolate for them too. Everyone can use a bit of chocolate on a stressful day.”

At another event, an elderly guest arrived at the venue and showed signs of a Diabetic reaction. “I’ve known others with Diabetes and I recognized the signs. We made a sprint to the condition to get her some juice and a roll so that she could get some sugar and food into her system,” shared Olivia DeLanghe from our sales team.

This all said, one could argue that anyone could do these things, and this is absolutely true. But, when you have a specific role to play, you might not always be seeing what else is going on around you. “We make it a point to take in our surroundings and pay attention to what is happening at our events. Our goal is to create an event to remember, and we want it memorable for all the great things that happened that day, and not just those little mishaps that could turn into something worse,” shared Ann Bloomquist Jarema, vice president of sales and marketing.

Your role is bigger than just you 

At weddings and other big events, the role is about more than just what you are there to do. “We have been invited to be a part of this big activity and this special day, and we’ve been in the business for years. We’ve seen it all. We’ve even had our chefs out on the floor helping to reset boutonnieres, rearrange flowers that have somehow become discombobulated, and more,” shared James Gonzalez, vice president of operations and corporate sales. “We treat our clients like family. If we need to help out somewhere besides in the kitchen, we’ll do just that.”
